The Iris Reserve protects one of the last wild stands of the Netanya iris, a rare purple-black flower found almost nowhere else on earth, growing among dunes and scrub just inland from the city's southern beaches. Even outside the short spring bloom it's a quiet pocket of coastal nature, sandy paths and sea views well away from the promenade crowds.
The reserve is at its best between February and March when the irises flower, though the walking paths are open and pleasant year-round.
Local tip: Wear closed shoes for the sandy trails, and check local bloom updates before making a special trip just for the flowers.
