Forestry Museum of Lapland

Poykkola

Why it matters: run by a local museum association rather than the state, this labour-of-love museum preserves the story of Lapland’s logging camps and log-floating era – every ticket directly supports keeping that heritage alive. Nine original buildings in the woods by Salmijarvi lake show how lumberjacks lived and worked in brutal conditions from the 1870s to the 1950s, a side of Lapland the Santa attractions skip entirely. Poke around the cabins with their original tools, then linger in the quiet lakeside forest about 4 km from the centre. Summer season only: Mon-Sat 11-17 from June, adults 10 euros.
