Kunsthaus KAT18

Sudstadt

Why it matters: KAT18 is an inclusive art house in Cologne’s Sudstadt where around 24 artists with disabilities work in professional studios, run by the nonprofit KUBiST e.V. (founded 2006) together with the Gemeinnutzige Werkstatten Koln. Housed since 2014 in the vaulted rooms of a former Carthusian-quarter brewery, it pairs a gallery of rotating exhibitions with a small Kaffeebar where a team of people with disabilities cooks and serves. Come for a changing show of genuinely striking contemporary art, then stay for homemade cake and good coffee at the bar. Tip: check the exhibition calendar on kunsthauskat18.de before visiting, and the cafe is a calm weekday lunch stop.
