Why it matters: opened in September 2005 and run largely by around 20 volunteers, Weltladen Bornheim is one of Frankfurt’s longtime fair-trade shops — a nonprofit, now part of the WELTLADEN-BETREIBER cooperative, that stocks only fairly traded goods paying producers in the Global South a fair price. It sits right on the buzzing Berger Straße, making it an easy and meaningful stop between cafes. Pick up a bar of the fair ‘Frankfurter Stadtschokolade’ with its nougat filling, or browse the handicrafts — ceramics from South Africa, silk scarves from Vietnam, baskets from Morocco. Tip: closed Sundays, and weekday afternoons are the quietest time to browse.
