On a rocky hill where the Morača meets Lake Skadar sits Žabljak Crnojevića, the atmospheric ruined fortress-town that was once the capital of Zeta — medieval Montenegro. A short scramble up leads to crumbling ramparts and a little church, with sweeping views over the wetlands, lily-covered channels and villages of the Skadar basin. Quiet, evocative and steeped in history, it’s one of the most rewarding easy day-trips from the modern capital.
