One of the most spectacularly sited monasteries in Georgia — a small, ancient complex perched on a cliff above a bend in the red-tinged Tskaltsitela river, about 6km from Kutaisi. Named the “Place of the Martyrs” for the 8th-century brothers David and Constantine, its little churches with peaked, tent-shaped domes are quieter and far more dramatically set than nearby Gelati. Come for the setting, the stillness and the sweeping views over the gorge.
Book it: a Bagrati, Gelati & Motsameta tour from Kutaisi takes them all in.
