Naeho Naengmyeon is one of Busan's living legends — a cold-noodle house first opened in 1919, carried south by a refugee family during the Korean War and reborn in Busan in 1953. It has a strong claim to being the first place in South Korea to serve milmyeon, the wheat-flour cold noodle that has since become a defining Busan dish.
The bowls are the whole point: springy wheat noodles in a chilled broth, topped with sliced egg, a little meat, cucumber and shredded radish — soft-textured and bracingly refreshing in the summer heat. It is a plain, unfussy, generations-old spot in the Nam-gu district where locals queue for a taste of history.
Local tip: Come hungry and in warm weather — milmyeon is at its best on a hot Busan day. Add a little of the vinegar and mustard on the table to taste, and do not expect frills: the noodles are the star.
