Restoran Yunus Khan — universally known as 'Jiao Sai' — is a Penang institution of the late-night mamak variety, the kind of unpretentious, open-fronted spot where George Town comes to eat after dark. The nickname is pure local humour: Hokkien for 'bird droppings', a leftover from its original perch on a road that lived up to the name.
The thing to order is the Maggi goreng — instant noodles stir-fried mamak-style, springy and savoury, classically topped with a sunny-side egg and shredded fried chicken — cheap, fast and moreish. It is halal, informal and best enjoyed elbow-to-elbow with locals over a glass of teh tarik.
Local tip: It is a supper spot at heart, so it comes into its own late in the evening. Go with a small group, order a spread of plates to share, and wash it down with a frothy teh tarik.
