Sultiniai

Sultiniai is a gloriously unreconstructed slice of old Vilnius — a cheap, stand-up soup canteen that has barely changed since Soviet times and is all the more loved for it. The name means 'broths', and a bowl of the real chicken sultinys is the thing to order, ladled out alongside stuffed flour buns, cutlets and the sort of honest, filling fare that costs next to nothing.

There are no frills and often no seats — you eat standing at high tables, elbow to elbow with office workers, students and pensioners. The menu runs to Lithuanian and Soviet-canteen classics: koldūnai and cepelinai, potato pancakes, Chicken Kiev and that famous broth, plus an old-school juice counter. It sits centrally on Jogailos gatvė.

Local tip: Go at lunchtime for the full bustling experience, bring a little cash and do not expect table service or English menus — point at what looks good and dig in. The broth is the local's order.
