Schloss Höchst

★ 4.5

Schloss Höchst crowns the old town of Höchst, a handsome historic quarter on the western edge of Frankfurt. The 'new' palace, with its striking Renaissance stair-tower, rises above the River Main where a castle has stood since the Middle Ages — a picturesque anchor to one of the best-preserved old towns in the Frankfurt area.

The setting is the pleasure here: cobbled lanes of half-timbered houses, the riverside promenade and the castle's tower make for a lovely stroll well away from Frankfurt's skyscrapers. It is a short S-Bahn ride from the centre and pairs beautifully with the nearby Höchst porcelain heritage and the Justinuskirche, one of Germany's oldest churches.

Local tip: Combine it with a wander through Höchst's old town and a walk along the Main. It makes an easy half-day escape from central Frankfurt — check locally before visiting if you hope to see any interiors, as access can vary.
