The food court on the top floor of Botafogo Praia Shopping is one of Rio's great little secrets — an ordinary shopping-mall food hall with a genuinely extraordinary view. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame Sugarloaf Mountain, Guanabara Bay and the boats of Botafogo's marina, turning a quick, cheap bite into a front-row seat on one of the city's classic panoramas.
The food is standard mall fare — Brazilian per-kilo buffets, burgers, sushi, juices and coffee — but the point is the window seat. Sunset is the showstopper, when the light goes golden over the bay and Sugarloaf glows. It is air-conditioned, cheap and unpretentious, a handy refuge from the heat with a million-dollar outlook.
Local tip: Head up to the top floor and grab a table right by the windows, ideally for late afternoon or sunset. It is busiest at weekend mealtimes, so time it a little off-peak if you want a prime window spot.
