MDM — the Marszałkowska Dzielnica Mieszkaniowa — is Warsaw's grandest slice of socialist-realist city-building, centred on the monumental Plac Konstytucji (Constitution Square). Laid out in the early 1950s, it is a striking, slightly overwhelming ensemble of colossal apartment blocks, colonnades, sculptures and giant lamp-posts, conceived as a showpiece of the new People's Poland.
Wandering the square and Marszałkowska around it is a lesson in Stalin-era architecture and propaganda made concrete — heroic reliefs of workers, grand arcades sheltering cafés, and neon signs lovingly restored as part of Warsaw's cold-war heritage. It is a fascinating counterpoint to the rebuilt old town and the nearby Palace of Culture and Science.
Local tip: Come for the sheer scale and the details — look up at the reliefs and the restored neons, which are best after dark. It is an easy, atmospheric walk down from the Palace of Culture, camera at the ready.
