The Palace of Ceremonies — also known as the Palace of Rituals or Wedding Palace — is one of Tbilisi's most extraordinary buildings, a swooping, cathedral-like burst of 1980s Soviet-era expressionism perched above the Mtkvari river. Designed by architect Victor Jorbenadze, its sculptural, almost organic concrete forms make it a cult favourite among lovers of unusual architecture.
Built as a grand secular venue for weddings and ceremonies, it later passed into private hands and is used today largely as an events space, so access inside can be limited. Even so, the exterior alone — all soaring curves, arches and dramatic silhouettes — is worth the trip out to the Chughureti side for anyone into offbeat, monumental design.
Local tip: It is mostly an exterior sight these days, so go for the architecture and the river views rather than expecting to tour inside. Combine it with a wander around the nearby left-bank neighbourhoods.
