A small bohemian district across the Vilnia river that declared itself an independent republic in 1997, complete with its own tongue-in-cheek constitution posted on a wall. Artists’ studios, galleries, cafes and quirky sculptures fill its lanes, and the riverbank is a favourite spot to sit in warm weather. It is an easy, offbeat wander a few minutes from the Old Town, and best explored slowly on foot.
