Caru’ cu Bere is Bucharest’s most famous beer hall, serving traditional Romanian food since 1879 in a spectacular neo-Gothic interior of carved wood, stained glass and painted vaults. On Strada Stavropoleos in the Old Town, it remains hugely popular for hearty dishes such as sarmale, mici and schnitzel, often accompanied by live folk music and dancing. Despite the crowds, it is a genuine local institution and an atmospheric place to sample Romanian classics.
