Tatoi Forest (Former Royal Estate)

Tatoi (North Attica)

A vast, pine-cloaked escape barely half an hour north of Athens: the 10,000-acre former royal estate of Tatoi, bought by King George I in 1871 and left to the forest since the monarchy ended in 1974. Today it’s a Landscape of Special Natural Beauty laced with walking and cycling trails, shady picnic spots and the atmospheric, faded palace buildings, now under restoration. Pack a picnic and good shoes for a proper lungful of countryside close to the city.

While you’re in the city, pair it with a Athens after-dark food & wine tour.
