The Firkas Fortress guards the western entrance to Chanias harbour, a Venetian bastion whose ramparts offer sweeping views across the water to the lighthouse. Site of the raising of the Greek flag at Cretes union with Greece, it houses the Maritime Museum and hosts events in its courtyard, combining history, symbolism and one of the finest vantage points over the old harbour.
