Fort St George was built by the British East India Company in 1644 and is the first British fortress in India, still housing Tamil Nadu's Legislative Assembly and Secretariat today. The museum inside holds colonial-era weapons, uniforms, coins and paintings across two floors, giving a concentrated look at Madras's earliest colonial history in one ticketed stop.
Local tip: Photo ID is required to enter the fort grounds since government offices still operate there.
