Kapaleeshwarar Temple is a working Shiva temple in the heart of Mylapore, rebuilt by the Vijayanagar kings in the 16th century after the original coastal shrine was destroyed by Portuguese colonizers. Its towering, brightly painted gopuram and the temple tank around it anchor the whole Mylapore neighbourhood, including the streets of flower and kolam-powder sellers just outside.
Local tip: Non-Hindus are welcome in the outer areas but not the inner sanctum; dress modestly and expect to remove your shoes.
