The Torni Toilet (Ateljee Bar)

★ 4.3

One of Helsinki's most delightfully unexpected sights is a toilet — specifically, the one at the Ateljee Bar atop the historic Hotel Torni. This penthouse cocktail bar was the city's first rooftop bar, and its loos come with a panoramic window looking out over the rooftops and spires of central Helsinki. It is genuinely one of the best free views in town.

You reach it by lift to the eighth floor, then up a tiny spiral staircase into the Ateljee Bar and down again to the famous restroom, where a picture window frames the city and, on the clearest days, a glimpse toward the sea. The bar itself is a lovely spot for a drink with the same knockout outlook — the toilet view is just the quirky, free bonus.

Local tip: The loo is free to use, but it is only polite (and far nicer) to buy a drink and enjoy the view from the bar too. Go around sunset for the best light over the city.
