Victoria Harbour

Victoria Harbour is the stretch of water separating Hong Kong Island from Kowloon, the reason for the territory's development as a trading port and still the setting for the skyline views for which the city is known. Since 17 January 2004 it has hosted A Symphony of Lights, a nightly sound and light show synchronising lighting, lasers and music across buildings on both shores. It began with 18 buildings on the island side, extended to Kowloon in December 2005, grew to 47 participating buildings by 2007 and was reworked in December 2017. It holds a Guinness World Record as the largest permanent light and sound show. The show runs nightly at 20:00 for about ten minutes and is free to watch, with the Avenue of Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui and Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai the two main free viewing points; a Star Ferry crossing gives a moving vantage point. The government announced in early 2026 that the nightly show will be retired during the second half of the year and replaced by occasional light installations, so confirming before travelling specifically for it is advisable.
