The city beach, and where Honolulu residents swim when they are not working. Roughly half a mile of sand faces a reef-protected lagoon that is calm, shallow and free of the surf and crowds of Waikiki, with a long grassy park of banyans and picnic tables behind it. Magic Island, a man-made peninsula at the eastern end, has a sheltered swimming lagoon and a perimeter path that is one of the better places in the city to watch the sun set behind the Waianae range. Facilities include showers, lavatories, lifeguards and free car parks. The park sits across the boulevard from Ala Moana Center and about twenty minutes' walk west of Waikiki. Canoe clubs, joggers and school groups use it heavily in the early morning and after work.
