Kakaako Murals

Several blocks of warehouses, car parks and blank end walls between Ala Moana Boulevard and Queen Street carry hundreds of large-scale murals, repainted and added to each year since the POW WOW Hawaii festival began in 2011 and continued under the name Worldwide Walls. The work ranges from international graffiti writers to Hawaii artists using Native Hawaiian motifs, and because walls are painted over, the district looks materially different from one year to the next. The densest concentration runs along Cooke, Auahi and Coral Streets, with SALT at Our Kakaako, a courtyard of shops, coffee and restaurants, a convenient starting point. It is free and always accessible, and best walked in daylight. Kakaako remains partly industrial, with construction hoardings and rough pavement between the finished blocks.
