Halekulani, meaning house befitting heaven, occupies a low-rise block on Gray's Beach at the quieter western end of Waikiki, on a site that has taken paying guests since the 1910s. The present buildings date from a 1980s rebuild around the original 1930s main house, and the tone is restrained rather than showy: rooms in white, grey and pale wood, an art collection through the public areas, and no resort fee. Several bars are open to non-residents, among them House Without a Key, an oceanfront terrace under a kiawe tree where Hawaiian musicians and a hula dancer perform at sunset, and Lewers Lounge for jazz. Dining runs from La Mer and Orchids to a street-side bakery. The hotel sits beside Fort DeRussy Beach Park, roughly twenty minutes by road from the airport.
