Yeldeğirmeni is a historical part of Kadıköy with plenty to offer. Many elderly Turkish citizens have lived here from birth. It’s relatively inexpensive, there are lots of things to see and do and it’s home to a bunch of art studios.

With an interesting blend of social classes and religions, it’s a great place to get to know another side of Istanbul. Simply wander around the streets, soak up the history and have a chat with the friendly locals. You’ll see impressive murals on the sides of buildings – these were painted as part of the Mural-Ist Street Art Festival.
You absolutely must check out the Don Kişot squat. It’s a social centre that was occupied by locals after the Gezi Resistance.
