Äkäslompolon Uimaranta (Äkäslompolo Beach)

Äkäslompolo's public beach is a stretch of sand on the lake at the edge of the village, free to use and with no facilities laid on – no toilets, no changing rooms, just the lake and the fell view behind it.

It's roughly a kilometre's walk from the nearest parking, which keeps it quiet even in the busier winter weeks, and it's as much a place for a cold-water dip after a sauna as a summer swimming spot.

Local tip: Bring your own towel and expect nothing but the view – this is a locals' spot precisely because it hasn't been built up.
