Plac Nowy

Plac Nowy is a square in Krakow's Kazimierz district, immediately south of the Old Town. Its centrepiece is the Okraglak, a round market hall built in 1900. From 1927 the city leased the building to Krakow's Jewish community, which used it as a ritual poultry slaughterhouse for the surrounding quarter until the German occupation ended that use; afterwards it returned to general market trade. Kazimierz declined badly after the war and renovation only began after 1989, accelerating once Schindler's List was filmed in the neighbourhood in 1993. The hall's outer hatches now sell zapiekanki, and a flea market of second-hand clothing, books and antiques sets up around the square at weekends, with a produce market on weekday mornings. Bars, restaurants and an underground bowling alley line the surrounding streets. The square is pedestrianised, about ten to fifteen minutes on foot from the Old Town, with tram stops nearby.
