OJez Restaurant

★ 4.1

OJez is a Lagos institution — a much-loved restaurant and live-music garden tucked inside the old Railway compound in Ebute Metta. It is a proper home of Nigerian food and Yoruba hospitality, as famous for its weekend live highlife and jùjú bands and buzzing open-air tables as for the plates coming out of the kitchen.

The food is hearty and authentically Nigerian — pounded yam and amala with rich soups, jollof rice, pepper soup, grilled fish and assorted meats — washed down with cold beer under the trees. At weekends especially it turns into a lively hangout where Lagosians come to eat, drink and dance late into the night to live bands.

Local tip: Go at the weekend for the full live-music experience, and come hungry — the swallow-and-soup combinations are the thing to order. It is relaxed and outdoors, so settle in for a long, sociable evening.
