Gauja, kafejnīca

Gauja is a bar at Stabu iela 32 in central Riga, occupying a wooden building it moved into after outgrowing an earlier site on Terbatas iela. The interior is furnished with Soviet-era pieces, 1970s seating and lighting set against mint-green walls, giving the room a preserved rather than a styled late-Soviet character; board games and old magazines are left out for customers. The clientele is largely students and local residents rather than visitors. Alongside Latvian and imported beer the bar serves simple food, cakes and coffee. No verifiable date establishes when the business first opened, so the claim that it has traded for forty years cannot be confirmed; the furnishings date from that period rather than necessarily the bar itself. It generally opens from late morning into the evening on weekdays, later on Friday and Saturday nights, and from the afternoon on Sundays. The site is within walking distance of tram and trolleybus stops on Terbatas and Brivibas streets.
