Borgo Pio

Borgo Pio is a narrow cobbled pedestrian street in Rome's Borgo district, a short walk from St Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums. The surrounding neighbourhood took its present form in the 1930s, when much of the medieval Borgo was demolished under Mussolini's government to create the wide Via della Conciliazione linking the Tiber to St Peter's Square, displacing many residents to Garbatella; Borgo Pio itself survived the clearance and keeps an older street pattern of the kind the demolition removed elsewhere. Closed to general traffic, it is lined with trattorias, gelaterie, small shops and cafes, with side lanes and small piazzas including Piazza del Catalone opening off it. A small antiques and collectables market is held on selected mornings. The nearest metro station is Ottaviano-San Pietro-Musei Vaticani on line A, about ten minutes away, with bus routes 32, 40, 62, 492, 913 and 982 and tram line 19 also serving the area.
