Kino Bosna

Kino Bosna is a bar occupying the former foyer of a cinema at Alipasina 19 in Sarajevo. The building traded for decades as Kino Prvi Maj, the First of May Cinema, and continued to show films intermittently through the siege of 1992 to 1995 before closing in 1997. It was later converted into a bar and retains much of the original interior, including film posters and worn fittings, and still screens films occasionally. It is known chiefly for live sevdah, the Bosnian urban folk song form, performed on Monday evenings from around 20:00, with music on some other nights as well. The performances are informal and free to attend; musicians play among the tables and the room joins in singing. Drinks are inexpensive, the interior is small and heavily smoky, and tables fill early, so arriving well before the music starts or reserving ahead is advisable for Monday nights. The bar sits a short walk west of the city centre along Alipasina.
