Café Saudade occupies the old Queijadas da Mathilde cheesecake factory, the bakery that once supplied Sintra’s famous queijadas to King Ferdinand II, and the building still carries that history in its worked ceilings and tiled walls.
Walk in from the train station towards the historic centre and you’ll pass it on your left; inside, several small rooms and niches give it the feel of someone’s living room, right down to a single table for eight tucked into its own alcove.
The cakes are baked in-house or brought in from a bakery nearby, the bread comes fresh with Azores butter, and the menu runs from hot pressed sandwiches and veggie soup to an apple cake regulars keep coming back for.
Local tip: Order the traditional queijadas alongside an XL latte with a double shot if you want the full Sintra pastry experience in one sitting.
