The colonnaded courtyard at the centre of Diocletian's Palace is free, open day and night, and still used as a public stage.
Stand among the Roman columns below the cathedral bell tower, with the Egyptian sphinx on one side and the domed Vestibule beyond.
Local tip: It is quietest before eight in the morning; note that the cafés here charge for the cushions on the steps.
