San Giusto Castle crowns the hill above the Old Town on the site of Trieste’s Roman forum, and its Venetian-era ramparts and museum hold 4.5 on Google across more than 6,300 reviews.
The walk up from the centre passes the Roman Theatre and the cathedral, and the castle courtyard and ramparts give one of the best rooftop views over the port and the gulf of anywhere in the city.
Local tip: The lapidarium inside the walls, a collection of Roman stonework, is easy to miss but worth the few extra minutes.
