Busboys and Poets Anacostia

Busboys and Poets Anacostia

The Anacostia branch of a local group of restaurant-bookshops named after Langston Hughes, who worked as a busboy in a Washington hotel before his poetry was recognised. Each site combines a full restaurant with an independent bookshop weighted towards politics, race and social justice, and a programme of open-mic nights, author talks and community meetings, many of them free. This branch opened in 2019 on Martin Luther King Jr Avenue and was among the first sit-down restaurants of its kind in the neighbourhood for many years, with a stated commitment to local hiring. The dining room is large and the menu broad, with substantial vegetarian and vegan options. Anacostia Metro station is a short walk away.
