Wroclaw's oldest quarter sits on an island across the Oder from the modern centre, its cobbled lanes wrapped around a Gothic cathedral whose nave is free to enter. At dusk a lamplighter still does the rounds by hand, lighting the gas street lamps one by one, a tradition that survives in only a handful of European cities.
Local tip: Note that entry to the cathedral tower and side chapels is ticketed even though the main nave is free.
