NAMA was Zagreb's grand old department store — a Croatian institution that traded for some 140 years, its flagship housed in a handsome historic building right by the main square. For generations of Zagreb residents it was simply where you shopped, a nostalgic landmark of the city centre with roots going back to a 19th-century hotel on the site.
After well over a century, the iconic NAMA store has closed its doors, a poignant end for one of the city's best-known names. The main Ban Jelačić square and the streets around Ilica remain Zagreb's busy shopping heart, lined with shops, arcades and the bustling Dolac market just behind.
