The Palace Hotel Zagreb stands on Strossmayer Square, part of the chain of parks and squares known as the Green Horseshoe, and is the city’s oldest hotel in continuous operation. The building went up in 1891 as the Schlessinger Palace, a private residence in the Historicist manner, and was converted for hotel use in 1907; elements of a Vienna Secession interior scheme survive on the ground floor, including in the cafe. Rooms are traditional in style and vary considerably in size and outlook, as is common in adapted historic buildings. It is roughly five minutes on foot from the main railway station and ten from Ban Jelacic Square, with the Archaeological Museum and the Art Pavilion close by.
