Nicosia is the last divided capital in Europe, and walking down Ledra Street to the crossing point on the UN buffer zone, known as the Green Line, is a poignant and fascinating experience. Visitors can pass through to the northern side or peer down streets frozen since 1974. The line, with its sandbags, barrels and sealed buildings, cuts through the heart of the old city, making it one of the most unusual and thought-provoking sights in the capital.
