The star-shaped Venetian walls, built in the 16th century, still encircle old Nicosia with their eleven bastions, and the beautifully restored Famagusta Gate is one of three original entrances, now a cultural centre. Walking the walls and moat, and admiring the great vaulted passage of the gate, offers a sense of the citys military past and its Venetian rulers. The walls define the shape of the old town and are among its most impressive and enduring historic features.
