Hipster Shopping in Rome: Monti, Vintage and Indie Design

Rome does ancient better than anywhere, but it also has a quietly cool creative streak. Skip the souvenir stalls: this is where design lovers, vintage hunters and stylish locals actually shop.

Monti, the original cool quarter

Tucked behind the Colosseum, Monti is Romes most walkable design neighbourhood. Its cobbled lanes, Via del Boschetto and Via dei Serpenti, are lined with independent boutiques, jewellers and concept stores.

Weekend vintage at Mercato Monti

The neighbourhoods anchor is Mercato Monti, a weekend market of young designers, upcycled fashion and one-off vintage that feels nothing like the tourist trade.

Refuel where the locals do

Break for a glass of wine at Ai Tre Scalini, the ivy-covered Monti wine bar that has been a neighbourhood favourite for decades.

Cross the river for more

For a second hit, the lanes of Trastevere hide vintage shops and artisan studios between the trattorias.
