The Museum of Broken Relationships stands on Cirilometodska Street in Zagreb’s Upper Town, a few paces from St Mark’s Church. It was founded by the film producer Olinka Vistica and the sculptor Drazen Grubisic, who conceived it after their own relationship ended, and became a permanent museum in 2010 following several years touring internationally. The collection holds roughly 3,500 donated objects, each paired with an anonymous written account of the relationship it belonged to; only part is shown at any one time and displays rotate. Subjects reach well beyond romance into family, migration, war and bereavement. The museum won the Kenneth Hudson Award at the European Museum of the Year Awards in 2011. Admission is charged, and there is a cafe and a gift shop on site.
