Trading on the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and N Street since 1933 and run by four generations of the same family, Martin's is a genuine neighbourhood institution rather than a themed recreation. The interior is dark panelled wood, leaded glass and booths, several of which carry small plaques marking presidential patrons; booth three is where John F. Kennedy is said to have proposed to Jacqueline Bouvier in 1953. The menu is Anglo-American tavern cooking of the older school, including crab cakes, oysters in season and a Sunday roast. Breakfast is served daily, which is unusual for the area. Reservations are advisable at weekends. The site is a straightforward walk from the Georgetown waterfront and the C&O Canal.
