Rua das Padarias is the narrow, cobbled street at the heart of Sintra’s historic centre, lined with the town’s oldest pastry shops, small boutiques and cafés, and free to wander at any hour.
It’s the natural spine of any walk through old Sintra, running close to the Palácio Nacional and linking many of the historic-centre’s other free sights, so most visitors pass along it more than once in a day.
Nothing here requires a ticket, but the queues outside its most famous pastry shops are a good indicator of how busy the old town gets by midday.
Local tip: Walk it early in the morning before the day-trip coaches arrive, when the street itself is far quieter than by lunchtime.
