Meros Paper Mill in Konigil village is the only workshop in Uzbekistan still hand-making paper by the old method, pounding mulberry bark into pulp and pressing it into sheets by hand. Samarkand paper was famous enough by the 10th century to outlast and outsell Chinese paper along the Silk Road, and this small mill keeps that specific craft alive rather than just its memory.
It's a short trip outside the centre, so pair it with other Konigil-area stops to make the detour worthwhile.
Local tip: You can buy sheets of the handmade paper directly on site as a genuinely distinctive souvenir.
