Sisu Outdoor is the shop locals send you to when the big sports chains don't have what you actually need. Run since 2017 from the centre of Äkäslompolo, it doubles as a hiking and ski shop and a rental point, stocking proper gear from brands like Fjällräven, La Sportiva and Black Diamond.
In winter that means Peltonen skis, sliding snowshoes and Fjellpulken sleds for hire; come summer, it's electric mountain bikes and packrafts for exploring the lakes and rivers around Ylläs.
Local tip: Staff run their own guided tours too, so it's worth asking what they'd recommend for the day's conditions rather than just grabbing gear off the shelf.
