Bear Watching in Romania: Libearty Sanctuary or a Wild Bear Hide?

Quick answer: Romania has two good ways to see brown bears, and the season decides between them. From late spring to autumn, a wild bear hide at dusk in the forests near Brașov gives you the real thing, with no guarantee. All year, the Libearty Bear Sanctuary near Zărnești shows you rescued bears on a guided morning walk. It is closed on Mondays and tickets open only ten days ahead. Base yourself in Brașov for either. Whatever you book, never stop for, approach or feed bears by the roadside.

Which bear experience fits your trip

Romania has one of the largest brown bear populations in Europe. A national DNA study published in 2025 put it at roughly 10,400 to 12,800 bears. That makes sightings realistic, but the experience you want depends on when you travel and what you want to see.

  • Best in winter, and best for families with kids over five: the Libearty Bear Sanctuary.
  • Best for wild bears, roughly spring to autumn: an evening at a bear hide near Brașov.
  • Best if you also want castles: a combined tour with Bran, the sanctuary and Râșnov.
  • Not an option at all: stopping for “roadside bears” on mountain roads like the Transfăgărășan.

Libearty Bear Sanctuary: rescued bears, all year

Libearty sits in oak forest outside Zărnești, about 30 km from Brașov. It was founded by the Romanian charity Asociația Milioane de Prieteni (Millions of Friends) and today shelters more than 130 bears, plus some wolves and deer, across 69 hectares. Most of the bears were rescued from cages at restaurants, hotels and circuses. Our Brașov day trips guide tells the story of Maya, the bear that started it.

This is not a zoo, and the rules show it. The sanctuary opens only for a few hours in the morning so the bears are left in peace. Visits are guided walks in Romanian or English, at fixed times that change by season. The classic tour takes about an hour and a quarter and covers about 2 km. In late summer 2026 it ran Tuesday to Sunday at 9:45 and 11:15. The sanctuary is always closed on Mondays. An electric fence separates the trail from the bears, and the bears decide how close they come, so some walks are better than others.

Booking: tickets go on sale online ten days before each date, and places are limited. Adult tickets start at 95 lei. Children under five are not allowed in, and you may be asked for proof of age. Private and VIP tours with access to closed areas must be requested at least 72 hours ahead. There is no simple public transport to the gate, so most visitors book a Libearty tour with transfer from Brașov. Check that the option includes the entry ticket. See our listing for the Libearty guided tour.

Best for: winter trips, families and anyone who wants to understand why bears end up in captivity. Trade-off: these are rescued animals behind a fence, and the morning-only schedule is rigid.

Wild bear watching from a hide: the real thing, in season

To see bears in the wild, you sit quietly in a purpose-built hide in the forest near Brașov while bears come out to feed in the evening. Most trips from Brașov take about four to five hours, including the drive, and groups are kept small. Nothing is guaranteed, which is part of the point. You will need to stay silent and still for a long stretch.

Timing is the catch. Bears den over winter, so most hide operators run only from around April or May to October, and dates vary by operator and weather. If you are traveling in winter, book the sanctuary instead and save the hide for another trip. In season, compare wild bear watching tours from Brașov and check the season dates on the listing before you pay. Our listings for brown bear watching in the Carpathians and the Carpathian bear-watching hide have more detail.

Best for: photographers and patient wildlife lovers. Trade-off: seasonal, no sure sighting, and not much fun for restless kids.

Bears and castles in one day

If you only have one free day near Brașov, a combined tour with Bran Castle, Libearty and Râșnov covers the main sights with transport sorted. The sanctuary’s morning-only hours set the schedule. Râșnov’s fortress interior has been closed for restoration (as of October 2026), so check what that stop includes. See our listing for the bear sanctuary, Bran and Râșnov tour.

Coming from Bucharest? Day trips to the sanctuary from Bucharest exist, but they mean a long drive both ways for a short morning visit. A night in Brașov makes the day much easier.

The one rule: never feed roadside bears

Bears that learn to beg for food at the roadside, especially along the Transfăgărășan, are the ones that end up hurting people and being shot. In June 2026, three tourists were injured by bears on the Transfăgărășan in a single day after approaching them. In November 2025 the Romanian government announced fines of 10,000 to 30,000 lei for feeding bears. If you see a bear from the car, keep the windows up and keep driving. Paying for a sanctuary visit or a hide with a responsible guide is the way to see bears without putting yourself or the animal at risk.

Where to stay for bear watching

Brașov is the natural base. Sanctuary and hide tours pick up there, and you have the castles and the old town for the rest of your stay. Hotels in Brașov’s Old Town keep you near most pickup points. Our guide to where to stay in Brașov compares the areas. If you would rather wake up near the bears and hike in Piatra Craiului National Park, look at places to stay in Zărnești and drive or take a taxi to the sanctuary.

A local tip: Book the sanctuary for your second morning in Brașov, not your first. Tickets open only ten days ahead, and a buffer day lets you move it if the weather turns or a tour fills. Spend the free afternoon on the castles or the old town.
