Day Trips from Cluj-Napoca: Turda, Castles and Sighișoara

Quick answer: The easiest day trip from Cluj-Napoca is Salina Turda, the salt mine in Turda, about 30 km south. You can reach it by local bus and see it in half a day, or add Turda Gorge to make a full day. For castles, the best full day is Corvin Castle with the Alba Carolina citadel, which usually comes bundled with the salt mine on a guided tour. Sighișoara is a long but rewarding day. Bran Castle is about four hours each way, so do it from Brașov unless you only have one free day.

Which day trip from Cluj fits your trip

Cluj sits in the northwest corner of Transylvania. That makes Turda close and easy, puts the big castles two to three hours away, and leaves Bran at the far end of a long road. The real decision is how much time you want to spend in a van.

  • Best half day, and best without a tour: Salina Turda.
  • Best for hikers: Turda Gorge, on its own or with the salt mine.
  • Best castle day: Corvin Castle in Hunedoara plus the Alba Carolina citadel in Alba Iulia.
  • Best for medieval towns and Saxon villages: Sighișoara and the fortified church at Biertan.
  • Best for village scenery: Turda combined with Rimetea, below the Piatra Secuiului ridge.
  • Only if you must see Bran: the 13 to 15 hour Dracula’s Castle tour from Cluj.

Salina Turda: the one most people should do first

Salina Turda is a former salt mine that now works as an underground visitor center. You walk down through long galleries cut into the salt and come out above the Rudolf Mine, a huge chamber with a Ferris wheel, a mini-golf course and a sports court far below. You can also take the stairs down into the Terezia Mine and rent a rowboat on its underground lake. Read more in our Salina Turda listing.

  • Getting there: Turda is about 30 km from Cluj. Local buses take roughly 50 to 60 minutes. They drop you on the edge of Turda, so plan on a short taxi ride to the mine. A tour or a car is simpler if you want to add the gorge.
  • Opening hours (checked October 2026): daily 9:00 to 17:00, last entry 16:20.
  • Tickets (checked October 2026): adults 75 lei on weekdays and 90 lei on weekends and public holidays. The Ferris wheel, mini-golf and boats cost extra. The mine sells tickets online on its official site.
  • Our advice: go on a weekday morning. It is cheaper, and the galleries are much calmer before the tour groups arrive. Bring a layer, since it stays cool underground in every season.

If you prefer not to deal with buses, a guided day such as Turda Salt Mine, Turda Gorge and Rimetea from Cluj covers the transport and adds two stops you would struggle to reach in one day by public transport.

Turda Gorge: the best nature day

Turda Gorge (Cheile Turzii) is a nature reserve about 13 km from Turda. The Hășdate River has cut a gorge almost 2 km long through limestone, with rock walls up to 200 meters high and more than 60 caves. The main trail runs along the river and crosses a series of footbridges, and marked routes climb onto the ridges for longer hikes.

  • Who it suits: anyone comfortable on uneven, sometimes wet paths. Wear real shoes, not sneakers with no grip.
  • How to do it: combine it with Salina Turda by car, or join the Turda Gorge guided hike from Cluj, a half-day tour with a guide and transport. Check dates for the Turda Gorge hike.
  • Season: spring and autumn are the most comfortable for hiking. In winter, check trail conditions before you go.

Add Rimetea if you can. The village of Rimetea (Torockó in Hungarian) sits in the Trascău Mountains below the Piatra Secuiului ridge. Its whitewashed houses won a Europa Nostra heritage award in 1999. A ravine splits the ridge, so on some summer mornings the sun appears to rise twice over the village. Several Cluj tours pair it with Turda.

Corvin Castle and Alba Carolina: the best castle day

If you came to Transylvania for a castle, this is the one to see from Cluj. Corvin Castle in Hunedoara is a Gothic fortress of towers, pointed roofs and a long wooden bridge over a moat, built up by John Hunyadi’s family in the 15th century. It is roughly 175 km from Cluj, or about two to two and a half hours by car.

  • Opening hours (October 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027): Monday 12:00 to 17:00, Tuesday to Sunday 9:00 to 17:00.
  • Tickets (2026): adults 55 lei. Guided tours in English cost extra, and there is a small fee for taking photos.
  • Heads-up: the castle’s stairs, balconies and high galleries are steep and uneven. Families with small children and anyone with limited mobility should take that seriously.

On the way back, most tours stop in Alba Iulia at the Alba Carolina citadel, a star-shaped Vauban-style fortress with seven bastions, built mostly between 1715 and 1738. Its gates and ramparts make a good place to stretch your legs after the drive.

The Turda Salt Mine, Corvin Castle and Alba Carolina tour packs all three into an 11-hour small-group day. That is a lot, but it is the most efficient way to see the castle without renting a car. If you only have one day trip in your plan, this is the one we would book.

Sighișoara and Biertan: the best medieval day

Sighișoara is a hilltop citadel of painted houses, a clock tower and a covered wooden stairway up to the church on the hill. Its historic center has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. It is about 150 km from Cluj by road. Trains run a few times a day and take roughly three hours, so a tour is easier for a same-day return.

The Sighișoara and Biertan guided tour from Cluj runs about 11 hours. It adds the fortified church at Biertan, the first of Transylvania’s Saxon fortified villages to be listed by UNESCO, in 1993. If you are already in Sighișoara, our Sighișoara citadel walking tour listing covers the town itself.

Consider sleeping there instead. Sighișoara is at its best in the early evening, after the day groups leave. If your route continues east toward Brașov, spend a night in or just below the citadel rather than doing it as a return trip. See hotels near Sighișoara’s citadel.

Bran Castle from Cluj: possible, but think twice

Bran Castle, sold to the world as Dracula’s Castle, is about 260 km from Cluj, or roughly four hours each way by road. Guided trips such as our Dracula’s Castle day trip from Cluj listing run 13 to 15 hours. That is most of a day in a vehicle for a castle you can see in a couple of hours.

  • If Bran is a must and you only have Cluj: book the Dracula’s Castle and Birthplace tour from Cluj, The “birthplace” in the name is Sighișoara, where Vlad III is said to have been born, so the long drive at least buys you two stops.
  • If you have two or three days: move on to Brașov. Bran is about 30 km from there, and you can combine it with the Libearty Bear Sanctuary or Peleș Castle. See our day trips from Brașov and where to stay in Brașov, or compare hotels in Brașov’s Old Town.
  • Bran hours (checked October 2026): until November 1, Tuesday to Sunday 9:00 to 19:00 (last entry), Monday from 12:00. From November 2 to March 31, last entry is 18:00. Halloween events run from October 24 to November 1, 2026, and on November 7 the last entry is 15:00 for a private event. A standard adult ticket is 100 lei.

Where to stay in Cluj for early pickups

Most day tours leave early and pick up in or near the center. Staying within walking distance of Piața Unirii (Union Square) means no taxi at 7 a.m. and an easy walk to dinner when you get back.

A local tip

Buses to Turda have used the Pod Traian stop, just north of Piața Mihai Viteazu, where Cluj’s Central Market sits. Pick up bread, cheese and fruit there before you leave. A picnic by the river is the best way to break up a day at Turda Gorge.
