Quick answer: Stay in Sibiu’s Upper Town, the walled historic center around Piața Mare, Piața Mică and Piața Huet. It is small, pedestrian and has almost everything you came to see. Pick the Lower Town below it if you want quieter streets and lower prices and do not mind walking uphill. Stay outside the center only if you are driving. If you are coming for the Christmas Market (November 13, 2026 to January 3, 2027), book early for weekends. Choose Piața Mică or Piața Huet if you want to be one minute from the market without sleeping above it.
Sibiu’s neighborhoods at a glance
Sibiu’s old center has two levels. The Upper Town holds the three main squares, the churches and the museums. The Lower Town spreads out below it toward the Cibin River and the railway station, linked by steep lanes and stairways. Everything else is modern city. For a first visit, the choice is really between the two halves of the old town.
- Best for a first visit: Upper Town, on or near Piața Mare.
- Best for the Christmas Market without the noise: Piața Mică or Piața Huet, one or two minutes from Piața Mare.
- Best for full-service hotels: Nicolae Bălcescu street and Piața Unirii, at the southern end of the old center.
- Best for quiet and value: the Lower Town.
- Best for drivers and families: the Dumbrava Forest area near the ASTRA museum.
Upper Town around Piața Mare: the classic choice
Piața Mare, the Large Square, is the center of Sibiu. The Brukenthal National Museum is on the square and the Council Tower stands at one corner. In winter the square holds the Christmas Market. Staying here means you can walk out of the door into the busiest part of town, then be back in your room in two minutes when your feet get cold.
Hotel Am Ring sits directly on the square at Piața Mare 14. Booking listings show it as a small hotel of around 26 rooms, with a restaurant and bar. If you want a window on the market, this is the address to try first. Parking is very limited, so ask before you arrive by car. Check rates at Hotel Am Ring.
Best for: first-time visitors, short stays, anyone here for the Christmas Market.
The trade-off: during the market, Piața Mare is busy until 22:00 every night, and busiest on weekend evenings. Light sleepers should ask for a room facing away from the square.
Piața Mică and Piața Huet: one minute away, calmer at night
Piața Mică, the Small Square, curves around behind the Council Tower. It has arcaded houses, café terraces and the Bridge of Lies, a cast-iron footbridge whose ironwork carries the date 1859. Piața Huet, next to it, is the quiet square around the Evangelical Cathedral. You are one or two minutes from Piața Mare, but the evening noise drops off quickly.
Casa Luxemburg at Piața Mică 16 is a small guesthouse of about ten rooms in a restored historic building that faces both Piața Mică and Piața Huet. Some rooms look toward the Bridge of Lies. It is an old building, so expect stairs and check for an elevator if you need one. Check rates at Casa Luxemburg.
Eat close by. Café Wien on Piața Huet does schnitzel, strudel and good coffee. Kulinarium and Crama Sibiană are both on Piața Mică. Book ahead on December weekends.
Best for: couples, return visitors, Christmas Market trips where sleep matters.
The trade-off: fewer rooms and fewer large hotels, so the best ones go early in market season.
Nicolae Bălcescu and Piața Unirii: bigger hotels, easy arrivals
Nicolae Bălcescu is the pedestrian shopping street that runs south from Piața Mare to Piața Unirii, at the edge of the old center. Hotels here are larger, and the southern end is easier to reach by taxi.
- Hotel Împăratul Romanilor at Strada Nicolae Bălcescu 4 is a historic hotel a couple of minutes from Piața Mare, close to the Brukenthal museum. Check rates at Împăratul Romanilor.
- Hotel Continental Forum at Piața Unirii 10 is a large modern hotel at the bottom of the street, around ten minutes’ walk from Piața Mare. It suits business travelers and anyone arriving late by car. Check rates at Continental Forum.
Best for: travelers who want a full-service hotel with an elevator and a front desk that never closes.
The trade-off: the walk back from the market is longer, and the hotels feel more generic than the small places on the squares.
Lower Town: quieter streets and better value
The Lower Town is the older working quarter below the walls, with narrow streets, colored houses and fewer visitors. Strada Ocnei runs downhill under the Bridge of Lies into it. The Passage of Stairs is the classic way back up. The Cibin Market, the city’s produce market, is at the far end, and the railway station is close by.
Accommodation here is mostly guesthouses and apartments rather than hotels, which is why it is usually cheaper. Compare places to stay in the Lower Town.
Best for: budget travelers, longer stays, anyone arriving by train.
The trade-off: every trip to the main squares starts with a climb. In winter, the stairs and cobbles can be icy, so wear shoes with grip.
Outside the center: only if you are driving
Sibiu’s larger international hotels sit away from the old town. They make sense if you have a car, need a pool or a big room, or are visiting ASTRA rather than the old town.
- Hilton Sibiu is on the edge of Dumbrava Forest, roughly 4 km south of the historic center and close to the ASTRA Open-Air Museum. Plan on a taxi into town every evening.
- Golden Tulip Ana Tower on Strada Școala de Înot is a tower hotel outside the historic center. Its draw is the view over the city from the upper floors.
Best for: road trips, families with a car, business stays.
The trade-off: you lose the main reason to stay in Sibiu, which is stepping out into the old town at night.
Staying for the Christmas Market
The Sibiu Christmas Market runs from November 13, 2026 to January 3, 2027 on Piața Mare. It began in 2007, the year Sibiu was European Capital of Culture. Entry is free. The organizers list more than 120 exhibitors, an ice rink and a 22-meter Ferris wheel, and say every stall takes cards.
- Opening hours (checked October 2026): Monday to Friday 11:00 to 22:00, Saturday and Sunday 10:00 to 22:00.
- When to go: the organizers say weekend evenings are the busiest. A weekday visit, or a Sunday-to-Tuesday stay, gives you the lights with fewer crowds.
- When to book: rooms on and around the squares are limited, so reserve weekend dates in late November and December as early as you can. Choose a free-cancellation rate if your plans may change.
- Where to sleep: Piața Mare if you want to be in the middle of it, Piața Mică or Piața Huet for a quieter night, and the Lower Town if you are on a budget.

Getting to your hotel
- Airport: Sibiu International Airport (SBZ) is about 5 km from the center, roughly 10 to 15 minutes by taxi.
- Train: the railway station is about a 15-minute walk from Piața Mare, uphill through the Lower Town.
- Car: the old center is pedestrian. The city barrier car parks at Cazarma 90 and Piața Teatrului charged 3 lei an hour as of October 2026. If your hotel is in the old town, ask in advance where to unload.
Day trips once you are settled
Start with a guided walk to get your bearings. Our Sibiu sightseeing tour listing covers the squares, the Council Tower and the Bridge of Lies, or book a guided walking tour of the old town.
For a full day out, Corvin Castle in Hunedoara is the classic trip from Sibiu. The Alba Iulia and Corvin Castle guided tour from Sibiu combines the castle with the star-shaped citadel at Alba Iulia. Check the departure days when you book. The Transfăgărășan is a summer trip only. Its high section closes for winter and reopened on June 12 in 2026. Closer to town, the ASTRA Open-Air Museum is an easy half day.
A local tip
Go to the Cibin Market in the morning, then walk back up to the old town through the Lower Town and the Passage of Stairs. It is the easiest way to see the half of Sibiu that most day visitors skip. If you are staying for the Christmas Market, do it before the stalls on Piața Mare open at 11:00 on weekdays.
