Crowning one of the highest of Bologna's southern hills, the monumental complex of San Michele in Bosco rewards a short climb with what may be the finest free view in the city. From its broad terrace the whole of Bologna unfolds below, rooftops and towers giving way to the plain and, on clear days, the distant Alps. It is a favourite escape for locals who want the panorama without the crowds.
Founded by the Olivetan monks in 1364 and rebuilt over the following centuries, the church and former convent hold a Renaissance facade and an octagonal cloister frescoed by the Carracci school. Do not miss the celebrated optical illusion along the inner corridor: a window frames the Asinelli Tower in the distance, which appears to grow larger as you step back and to shrink as you approach.
Local tip: It is a steady uphill walk or a short bus ride from the centre, so go in the late afternoon for the best light over the city and linger a while on the terrace.
